The Korean routine, minus the ten steps

The Korean routine, minus the ten steps

Korean skincare gave the rest of the world several genuinely good ideas: sun protection as a daily habit, gentle cleansing, hydration in layers, and treating skin as something you maintain rather than something you fix in a crisis.

It also gave the world the ten step routine, which is largely a retail invention, and which quietly convinced a lot of people that they were failing at skincare because they could not sustain it.

What actually earned its reputation

Double cleansing. Oil first to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, then a gentle water based cleanser. If you wear either, this genuinely works better than one aggressive wash, and it is kinder to your barrier.

Layering thin, not thick. Several light layers on slightly damp skin hydrate better than one heavy cream on dry skin. This is real and it costs nothing to adopt.

Prevention over rescue. The most useful idea in the whole philosophy. Consistent sunscreen and consistent gentle care beat any emergency product you buy at eleven at night after looking too closely in a mirror.

What you can safely ignore

The step count. Nobody needs an essence, an ampoule, a serum and a booster, because those four words describe overlapping categories that exist mostly to sell four bottles instead of one.

Sheet masks as a nightly requirement. They are pleasant, they hydrate for a few hours, and they are not a substitute for anything.

Anything promising to change your skin in a week. Skin renews on roughly a monthly cycle and no routine, Korean or otherwise, outruns biology.

The honest version

  1. Cleanse, twice at night if you wore makeup or sunscreen
  2. One hydrating layer on damp skin
  3. One active, if you have a specific reason for it
  4. Moisturiser
  5. Sunscreen every single morning, and this is the one that actually matters

Five steps. Do them for six weeks before you decide whether they work. That is the part no routine of any length can skip.
